Separate dwellings are better.

One option is to write two dwelling fire policies with the same company.

@Denzil Dwelle I would love to house hack, but living in shared wall spaces in base housing for 7 years now is not something my wife wants to do anymore. 

At this time yurts, tents, RV's, and similar structures are not being recognized as accessory dwelling units and therefore ineligible to receive short-term rental permits.

An additional strategy for my current house hack is to replace my old garage with a DIY container home or Additional Dwelling Unit (ADU).

From your coverage standpoint if you have the proper insurance coverage (landlord/Dwelling policy)  the cost of relocating a tenant due to an issue inside the property is covered. as well as the fix. 

@Vincent LudegnaAn ADU is an acronym for an “accessory dwelling unit”.

Is this going to be converted to a rental as an accessory unit or into a two dwelling flat (the zone will determine which one you can do)?
