They reach a point where they aren't really consciously constructing a lie anymore..... they are just living in an alternate reality that their previous lies and deceit have constructed and that the new "real" for them.Elizabeth Holmes is very intelligent and charming and started off with a very strong vision to change the face of medicine....... but the desire to achieve that vision overpowered the reality of the fact that the machine didn't work.....so she dug herself even deeper with more lies and acts of fraud because she couldn't comprehend that the path she was on was never going to achieve that vision.
