Also, if you plan to manage rental properties that you don't personally own, you'll need to have your license (in most states anyways, no sure about MD specifically).There are loopholes to that here in IL, such as being a full-time employee of the company that owns the rental properties, but there are stipulations with that as well.Read into the licensing laws in your state to get a better understanding of whether or not it's completely necessary.

Then the "company" can kick in another amount, whcih I forget.I believe now that the SIMPLE and SOLO401k have a "roth" option where the "employee" amount of the contribution is treated as ROTH vs. traditional contribution...excuse the imprecision of this answer ....

In order to be eligible for Solo 401k you need to have a small business w/o full time employees (other than you and spouse) or generate self-employment income (it does not have to be full time self-employment activity and can be in addition to full time job elsewhere).
