As someone who has been to SC Court dozens of times, make sure that they are what is called 'collectible' first.

Typically people are bidding 60-80% of assessed value, and with MD rules that drives the interest rate you receive to about 2-4%.

I take what the county says about assessed value at face value, and I try to buy at or below assessed value.
