I'm thinking that maybe the house shifted a bit as part of the move and that there are no real issues with the house.I'm trying to get a contractor to check out the property and let us know if there are any significant issues they can see, but from my understanding, even getting structural engineers to check out the property would require significant time and resources to perform a full evaluation.

We can replace flooring, countertops, etc for far less than they charged, but its hard (i.e. impossible) to add 9-foot ceilings after the house is built.

But you have to replace all the support bars, and that may not make economical sense for you if just redoing the sheetrock doesn't make sense.My experience has been that if you're going to hold on to the property it usually makes the most sense to just bite the bullet on the front end and restore it to a normal sheetrock ceiling.
