More than likely you will be competing with homeowners and they can spend a lot more than you can as they don't have the profit motive. 

They are basically being extra nasty because they are upset --- about whatever and they certainly could have any number of motives.

The electricity, plumbing, and/or heating in these places were invariably rigged by a drunk Mickey Mouse, whatever additions were built are of incredibly shoddy workmanship, and the last municipal inspector in there was obviously bribed to look the other way.
