I ask because I don't have experience yet and don't know what surprises may or may not lay in wait for me, and some of you might have experienced some of the unlikely but horrible situations I'm worried about.I appreciate whatever insight you have to offer.

There are somehow always surprises!!!

If they are very old, I'd still work into my budget the possible chance that they may fail, that way if you end up needing to replace them, its not a surprise, but you should really have some cash set aside just in case something happens anyhow.

I'm surprised your seller has been able to withhold that for so long.They don't have ground to stand on if it's in your purchase agreement, so you have all the power here.
