The best way I've heard the difference described is that you wouldn't remove your bumper, windshield, and seat belts just because you have auto insurance.Finally, you signed the promissory note and are liable for the balance even if you transfer the property.

@Benjamin Allen I've been in your situation a few times, and by far the technique that works best for me is automatically paying yourself first...I have an auto transfer set up to send money out of my checking account every month into another account that I don't touch.
