You now have a citation which probably means the inspector found something significant. 

Some cities issue expensive citations. 

Though your point about it being bad government and an oppressive environment to have everything being watched is correct, your examples and citations are not.

You can't do it and should expect the sign police to write you a citation and then take oyu to court when you don't comply and remove the signs.
