New Bern is largely a quiet area, has a bit of a higher density of Violent/Property Crimes than surrounding areas, but that's to be expected as soon as population density increases.

If the person seems violent, unhinged or uncooperative I would defer to normal channels, aka. formal eviction and having the sherrif remove them.

I stay away from areas that have excessive violent crime, and areas that aren't close to freeways or employment centers.
