You do need a market value to assess the level of collateral, so you need to know RE, valuation is critical,  but what you need to know can be learned in, lets say the time required in a college semester, or, if the cash reserves allow and the discount is deep enough, you can hire out the RE aspects, appraisers, BPO, attorney, contractor, inspectors, title folks and a good Realtor can probably cover the bases for you.

I’ve overseen the construction of an international branch bank, rehabbed two homes and flipped a home.

Personally i did internships in college in commercial and residential real estate and residential was a lot more fun.

With Lowes, Rubbermaid & Ingersol, plus the college, there is huge demand without even talking about the Charlotte refugees. 

There is another agency that I've seen list their own multis, GI International or something like that, and they have all been junk.
