I am a lawyer (a criminal lawyer) who not so long ago practiced real estate law.

I'd also recommend Gary Keller's The Millionaire Real Estate Investor because of the practical tips offered in the book. 

This is a practice by some less than reputable companies.

@Geoffrey Bissen  It is always best practice to put each property in an LLC.

Buying and rehabbing used homes can be a gamble - I've placed some that cost as little as $10 - 14k for buying, relocating, rehabbing, renting, etc.
