I would like to pick up my things and move. Where should I go?

I am a painter in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. I’m looking to move somewhere that is on the ups. Somewhere where I’d be able to make some money and enjoy living. Suggestions needed.

If I were looking for a W2 job in Michigan, I'd start looking in the general area of Grand Rapids, and that part of the state.

Not all places outside Michigan understand Deer Season, meaning cultural similarity to the U.P.

Have you been to Boise? It's a great town, great location. Definitely an outdoor paradise with a strong emphasis on healthy outdoor activities, plenty to see and do, all the amenities you need without being in a crowded place. Strong employment opportunities and a great place to invest for appreciation.

Asheville, NC!

I relocated from Harbor Springs, MI about 4 years ago. 4 full seasons here in Asheville, all temperate and each lasting 3 months. Plenty of work and potential staff. If you need more summer, then Charleston is only 4 hours away. Plus Asheville airport having explosive growth. Look me up!

I suggest starting with what makes you happy.

Move to the area that provides the most opportunity to be happy (or has a good airport to get you affordably to places to play).  If you like 24 hour nightlife for example, don't come to Boise, Idaho.  However, if you enjoy the great outdoors, being able to fish (and eat the fish) in the state capital, consider it.

I know too many people that move only for the $ a job pays, but then spend more than the difference trying to be happy.  NYC and Seattle pay really well, but would you rather live on a large lot in a 2,000 sq. ft. home or in a condo that is a 1 bedroom 1 bath studio for the same price?

What type of weather do you prefer, that plays a factor as well.

Moral of this story:  Go for quality of life - you only have one!
