Michael, and Daniel, my question is, even if it is possible to house hack, invest in California in the way Vincent is mentioning, would the property taxes deplete any cash flow made?

If you move out of the unit you'd increase your rent roll and even with your depleted cash position you'd still likely be able to quality for a loan for an owner occupied property.Just my two cents.

Just to clean up something I mentioned above.  

I'm trying to find a way to protect myself against that because I personally don't have much in the way of cash reserves for repairs and such and I fear my cash could be depleted quickly if something did go wrong.

If that is allowed, the clean up will be dirty, haulers here charge more for burned debris, no longer so much of an environmental issue but some haulers don't even want burned debris in their dump trucks as it's difficult to clean out.

On the surface looks like minor wood replacement/repair outside, and general cleanup and paint inside.
