The economy is so-so, moving from manufacturing to service but it have been a slow evolution. 

Most manufacturer's require a full drying of the roof within 48 hours.  

Or,  Should I put a manufactured home on it myself (after all, it is a good size lot) and make it into a long distance rental? 

@Rob MarzolfThe ability to be moved and lack of foundation is more applicable to manufactured homes which is why many municipalities will not allow them (outside of parks).

I believe it has to do with energy consumption and efficiency, the older heaters require more maintenance and consume more energy, in theory, but again it all depends on your unit, the manufacturer, and how it was maintained.

We have a robust operations, we manufacture raw materials ourselves, which needs to track % wastage and % produced, we also tracked miles and fuel usage, everytime we switch engines, it changes that data, just two if several dozens of components.

The only real difficulty in my experience is the first time you build them because of instructions take longer amount of time, however the second time you will notice a huge reduction in time used to build them.I also screw all the cabinets together and the plywood down to increase strength.I also find them stronger and reasonably priced to the Chinese manufactured cabinets that i used in flips.
