We have received responses and have already gone on an appointment but now I'm a bit stuck.

Unless there is something specified in the contract/agreement you signed with the property management company, that money is yours/your responsibility. 

@William Henze I'm curious to hear other responses from more experienced folks, but I did something similar and bought a duplex in Tennessee from a bank that was occupied.

His lawyers tried to blame me for the poor quality work but I presented them with a signed contract cancellation which let me off the hook and not liable or responsible to provide the seller with one single bit more than what he had already been provided before he cancelled his contract with me, and on top of it I also presented my unpaid bills.
