This concern is legit, especially data and statistics of the economy and unemployment rate are not that great.

What your life goals are, independent of Real Estate or financial goals.

Statistically speaking, the chances of him losing money off a safer deal like that are very slim, plus it would be such low maintenance especially if hiring management. 

Knowing you, I assume you're being facetious, and I agree :)  Asking a question and then answering it yourself, using mostly anecdotal statements that don't really have any weight of statistical evidence behind them, would make me suspicious as well.

You have to be able to do better than that.I don't have kids, so what I would do is to get a place with a locking garage near a police station somewhere in the slums where properties go for peanuts, put a fence around the place and a steel door front and back, put in an independent 8-16 security-camera setup, get a monitored door/window/glassbreak security system, put a 12-gauge home defense short-barrel shotgun in my closet, maybe a cuddly Doberman puppy, and I'd be fine.
