I'd recommend making a habit of doing this annually, and getting started the moment you get your packet in the mail.

@Nicholas McDonald I would recommend starting with something smaller to get your feet wet and start learning.

For heavy smoking, I recommend steam cleaning the walls, washing all the surfaces (cabinets, appliances, light fixtures, etc.), painting the walls and ceiling with an oil-based primer to ceiling in the remaining tar, painting, and installing new flooring.
