I think the biggest trick @Shane Pearlman brought up a big is knowing the different pockets and the people that want to be in those pockets.

The trick there is to be able to recognize when you have found a deal.

I am sure others have run into similar issues so I'd love to hear some tips/tricks on how to proceed in this situation.
