If you wanted to stay in the AMEX ecosystem and don't spend enough regularly to make cards with annual fees worth it then you are probably limited to the Amex Magnet card with its 200 bonus and flat 1.5% on everything (blue card is 1% on non-category spend so magnate is slightly better).  

Do all that you can - signs, walk neighborhoods, hand out business cards, magnets on your car, etc. etc. 

As long as SF, Silicon Valley, LA and San Diego continue to be magnets of innovation, job growth, quality of education, startups, and environmental quality these areas will always be prime areas to live in. 

They tend to magnetize their attention towards their larger clients with bigger portfolios.

It's been quite a journey watching it grow from a quaint, friendly research network to the massive, almost un-chartable - and certainly uncharitable - entity it is today.That I understand, perhaps if you had mentioned pin wiring boards, O's and 1's, punch cards and a duplicator, magnetic cassettes and two pole switches I could have followed you, LOL.Uncharitable is an understatement, BP is pretty civilized, look at some survivalist sites and you get death threats, LOL :)

But, primarily they were a magnet for teens that did not live in the neighborhood.
