Its been really a really huge mental shift for me in terms of understanding my personal finances, although in reality its just a slight change in behavior.

It may very well be, but I'd guess that this behavior is recognized as undesirable for lienholders because no one will bid the properties at the auction because this sort of behavior discourages it.  

Think of it as them being on a first date... this is the best possible behavior someone can have.

Hucksters operate in any and every industry; however, analysis will prove that in most instances a breach of ethical behavior would have been less tempting with a lower purchase price.
