I lived in both Houston and Dallas, didn't care for either, a very odd pervasive mentality of geographic bigotry in Texas, Austin being an exception (check out everything2.com/title/TexasMentality).

Keep in mind, there are many other more nuanced avenues to invest, but most strategies will fall into one of the 4 above.I also recommend picking a geographic area and putting a couple hours every week in to researching home values and rental rates in the area.
