Housing was a crux of 'the American Dream' post WW2, and we completed a lot of it.

Unfortunately we have a society now where the media throws gasoline on every fire and seeks to craft its own narrative.

.* Do not start chasing the "American Dream" of a nice house, car, dog, pool and all that junk.
