approach this is just to multiply $122 by 12, divide by $8,000, and ask yourself if you can put that $8k to work earning more than that, in which case you'd come out ahead via arbitrage.

Ian is correct that the lender chooses the appraiser, but if you know who you're using (and you're pre-approved, pending the appraisal), there is nothing wrong with asking your lender if you can order an appraisal ahead of time from someone  on their approved list.
