There is usually a sticker on the side of the unit to give basic info though. 

If it is in the metro I would drive around it a bit and see what you think of the area.I would look at the service panels to see if there are stickers from a recent inspection. 

I have an original window sticker for a 1963 VW bug for $1810 .

One has the VIN and other info on a sticker in the master closet, so I'm good on that one.
