Several different scenarios available: 1. subject is free and clear and the seller actually transfers the deed to your name and records a promissory note.

I wouldn't have taken a property like that for free.

Alternatively, I could use money I have saved in my Roth 401 K to pay it off, tax free.

Experian will do it for free but I think it is definitely worth paying for this.One reason it is worth the investment is because you want this reporting to all 3 credit bureaus.
