Put some open shelving above the dark cabinet in the corner.I would paint the cabinets white (I know you are leaning against it, but personally, it seems to be the style).I would add some shadow box molding to the wall under the chair rail, and paint the whole area under the chair rail white as well.I would do a basic tile backsplash, something beige to match the floor with a pop of color band or detail in it.I think the floor, wall color and dark counters allow for white cabinets to be done without it looking too white.

I believe the current mail box is a fence hung one right on that busy street, the type where the mail man parks and gets out to drop everyones mail at once type of thing.

So doing that way the value of the property at the time you took control was already set, you would not have a adjustment either up or down so nobody can contest if property would jump high in value at a later date..LOTS to consider.. why you built before you had this taken care of is a mystery.. but their is a way to figure it out.. make it tax and estate wise.

If there is any way to frame out the door to make it a regular height now is the time to do it, you won't regret it and I know it's a duplex so you'd have to probably match the entries.. but this size door is awful to order,, and a storm / screen door is just as costly.Stay informed with the local police safe officer and find out if other type incidents are happening in your area, the lighting, extra locks, new door are super but if someone wants in they will get in.With all the shiny new stuff empty boxes,, in trash of new TV's etc are calling card for burglars.. cut boxes down.
