Given the age of the house, your rafters are probably 2x4s (they'd be the old school actual full size 2x4's, but still too skinny), so you would likely need to add some furring thickness to get up to code R-values.

Depending on their appetite fur rusk and principle loss, this might be as low as 5-10%.  

If I'm thinking it right now, you've got about 120' of wall that you are furring out 4"?

It's just a little bit, but it was yet another thing that was probably triggering my allergies in this place (Yes, I'm allergic to everything - anything with fur, most grasses, most trees, all molds....)I've painted the ceilings in the kitchen, hallway and upstairs bathroom.
