I think you can dispute it and tell him you will pay $500, as an example ,to maintain an acceptable relationship.As for mine, no, He ans all questions same day.

It was my understanding that if there was a dispute, it would be the landlord's responsibility to establish a right to the deposit.

If you have a judgment through the legal system, then you can do this (the deadbeat can't dispute saying it's untrue).
