I don't know that we are headed for a period of global protectionism but it seems likely given that each country values their domestic needs as more important than others.I still think that with all the cheap money in the system we are bound for inflation, that's why gold is the bet.

Domestic goods would only be effected if imported goods are incorporated but since most commodities are steel, oil etc are traded in Dollar the US is immune to imported inflation from these goods.This is the self regulating mechanism that will bring the trade deficit back in line.
