As prices continue to drop, more people rush to sell and you enter a positive feedback loop which leads to a market crash.From the lens of expectation theory, if people believe we are going into a recession, they will act accordingly, pulling the given economy or market into a recession.Expectation theory is real and we see it all the time, but for a market unraveling scenario to occur, there needs to be a large majority opinion.

You nailed it and the only thing I would add is that if you're looking at location strictly through a recession-proof lens, the most important thing would be number of jobs in healthcare, federal government, education, IT, insurance, utilities, and other sectors that still do well in a downturn.
