From where I am sitting I can say AirBnB is still very active as our properties are getting booking requests quite often.We also self manage and do it with a good handyman, cleaner and reliable electrician and plumber.The one new thing we did when we purchased the 2nd property was we added automation software for the bookings and this has been one of the best decisions we made.

Get a good cleaner & handyman to operate and maintain your house.  

When we sold the company it also made things cleaner because it didn't reflect employee salary rather profit taking.

There are ways to automate that, but in general short term rentals will take more time, or cost to hire managers and cleaners. 

At this point if I had their deposit I would hire a cleaner and charge that to their deposit but I don't have it anymore so there is nothing I can do.
