However most people don't realize that the western end of the valley (Palm Springs, Cathedral City, and Rancho Mirage) are also partly on Indian Reservation land, even though they are developed and there are a large number of homes on the indian land (leased land at a maximum of 65 years), including some mobile home parks. 

Though, towards the mountainous (western) part of the state (Asheville) that you mentioned in your post, it does not get as hot, but the winters have more snow (skiing opportunities).
