If I were in your shoes, my advice is to start on a turnkey, get your feet wet, turnkeys will require maintenance and rehab as long as you continue to own them too.

I have a truck bed tool box, and aside from having a tool bag (separate) that has most any hand tool you could need, the box has spare fuses, a plumbing snake, rubber boots for a wet basement, a drill & saw, a little bit of wire, etc.
