We don't have them set up as LLCs but do have a generous umbrella policy. 

We maintain adequate insurance, including a $1M umbrella policy. 

Then if you have significant (like more then 1M assets) you can add an umbrella policy for another 2-3 million in coverage 

Because of the moratorium of writing new business in CA I cannot leverage my "normal" insurance carrier for an umbrella policy.

Also would like to discuss other options - umbrella policies, auto, etc.

If it's simply to "stay anonymous" from an ownership perspective that's understandable...but if it's for protection you can also get a lot of that from an umbrella policy. 

@Joseph DeConto for that you would typically get an umbrella insurance policy.

Until then, get good hazard insurance, a good umbrella policy if you feel the need, and put property (and the mortgage) in your name. 

At some point you might look into an umbrella policy once you start acquiring several assets.
