The way I see it is that I can either pay up and hope that they rent out the apartment quickly so I won’t be liable anymore or not pay, let my account go to collections, and eventually refute the charges and cross my fingers.

I wouldn't mind having my finger on the pulse but there could be a conflict of interest.Good luck!

Aside from my commercial tenants, I've never had a tenant shop around - they're happy to satisfy our insurance requirements of $10,000 possessions, $100,000 damage, $100,000 liability without ever lifting a finger.
