Not to go too far afield from the original question but this town is different from any other towns with trains because we are our own little slice or paradise...when you throw your line in the ocean you pull out a plump tasty fish and when you scatter some seeds you grow our own special datil peppers to make a tasty hot datil sauce to brush on your tasty fish...and then throw some oysters and clams on the beach fire grill...we have oceans where you can surf and skim board and Intracoastal where you can Kayak and windsurf and marshes where you can see pretty pink spoonbills and historic streets and buildings where you can dress like a pirate and drink rum and go argggg....when you can live here NO ONE I repeat NO ONE wants to live by the tracks...so to the original poster I say I would NOT buy anything on the railroad tracks !

@Joe Fairless , you could also put together some inexpensive gift bags filled with stuff you bought in bulk from a Wal-Mart or Costco, mainly candy, snack packs, and a few bottled waters with a note just wishing everyone a good year.

From experience I know that military moves are fast paced and stressful so I did a few things to ease their transition;Made sure they left Illinois with keys already in hand even though their lease wasn't officially started so they wouldn't have to go to a hotel or wait to link up with my agent for keys if they arrived at odd hours.Left Directv hooked up and operational so they could keep the kids entertained during unloading.Sent a large fresh fruit and snacks basket from Wine Country Gifts so they could have something immediately coming off of road trip food.Left them some furniture so they wouldn't have to get everything unloaded right away just to have a place to sit and relax after a long trip.Left them recommendations for the best vet in the area in case they had problems with their pets upon arrival.Just little things that I hope made for a little less stressful day 1.

Hosting an open house might not be very expensive (some snacks, mailing material, etc.) but having a publicized memorable open house, say, with sandwiches and lots of marketing materials can get pricey, especially if you want to send out postcards to 100+ people in your farm area. What if a local business was willing to front that cost in exchange for being listed as a sponsor on the marketing materials?

It’s amazing how many times people cut corners like not having beach chairs when near a beach, not having a high chair / pack in-play for family oriented homes or even just adding snacks.
