My rational is that repairs would not be a big issue and I could get warranty to offset any smaller repairs and so most of the generated rental income could be used towards the monthly payments and property taxes.

Using these % (any analytical %'s actually) assume all properties are equal...which they are not.Using these "shortcuts", and rationalizing their use as being "rules of thumb", is just being lazy.

You make your money when you buy...you realize your profit when you exercise your exit strategy down the road.If you do anything now, rationalizing on future events you have no control over, that will recover your loss (overpay) at purchase, you lose.

At this point the property has already been to auction, and didn't sell...We have close to 40 short sales in negotiation right now, and we can't come to any rational conclusion about why banks say and do what they say and do.
