They can always say that they did not have the money...They can say whatever they want but at the end of the day “not having the money” doesn’t alleviate them from their responsibility of paying what they contractually agreed to pay per the lease.

It could be shared/rented out to one tenant, which would help alleviate some of the financial burden; however, the cash flow situation you're in is still vastly different and, depending on your financial standing, potentially jarring.
