you have the wrong attitude, and it means you're going to get a bad deal no matter what you do.  

That is the mental attitude. 

I think the attitude you got was "What are doing offering me chump change don't you know what this is going to cost you?"

There's still that 'oh, don't worry your purrty little head' attitude.I've always been my own GC and worked with the subs directly, so this is a different situation, but you'll still have to figure out if this will be a harmonic situation or not.So, the initial bid is when I figure out some of the attitudes and if there's any chance for us to possibly work together.

But unfortunately people get caught up in the hype and want all the lavish things, keeping up with the Joneses type of attitude.

Having an attitude that is too preditory will get you a bad reputation, so will suggesting illegal or uncommon ways of doing business.

You may have more waste then a pro so might cost a bit more in material as you are learning but given your spirit and attitude I say give it a try.
