Collection agencies cannot initiate an item on a report, they can only buy existing debts which have been turned over to them or which have already been written off by the creditor and which they have purchased, and can post updates to such existing items.Items typically drop off the report after 7 to 10 years with no activity and even if they don't, at that age, they are irrelevant. As long as the item met all four criteria at the time it was reported, it can validly remain in the report.
