The problem with this option is that my brother would not qualify for a mortgage and would need a cosigner or I (or another sibling) would have to purchase the home in our name and then put the title in his name after the note is paid.

The biggest pitfall here is that unless you have an agreement in writing as to what everyone's duties and responsibilities are and then mother-in-law dies, a sibling or even another relative might make a claim to the property.
