LOL.The locks - maybe a compromise is in order, where you can put in a good latch for the inside - like one of those hotel type metal hooks that are more solid than a chain, so she can crack open the door to talk to someone and still be safe? 

shop around for cheaper ironworks guys and get a quote. i would image they quote around $800 - $1000 for gating the 1 area between the walls. that should be in your budget and is better than framing in a cheapo lattice DIY gate.if i really wanted to splurge, i'd go with aluminum gate; around here socal many folks including me of amerasian diaspora seem to love the rich modern light silvery look and it imparts heaps of feng shui apparently; doesnt have the black metal bars jail look at all!

So this is not just drilling some new 2" Tapcon screws into the concrete blocks, last one I had done they had to remove everything to the concrete blocks themselves, then epoxy in metal fins etc...all I am saying it's involved.

TJ's anecdote time.I spent several years in northern NV which is heavily dependent on metals mining.

Home needs painted but seems solid (metal) and has a good roof.  

Now I'm realizing that for this whole idea to fit in line with my values I'd really like to use my investing to not only create a passive income for myself but also to contribute to making low socioeconomic urban neighborhoods better, particularly for kids who grow up in those areas, like helping them be less exposed to toxic substances and pollution, or have safer neighborhoods to play in, or more access to health/education resources. 

Slightly off topic but if you replace the supply lines of your toilets do not forget to use the braided metal lines on the Clothes Washers.  

Scrap metal sales also can go back to guy who carries it to the junk yard.
