I took them to court where I won with the judge saying “their bookkeeping practices are negligent at best and their attitude about it appalling”.They of course are now appealing and continue to try to bully me away.

This does not only develop you the field you are working in.It develops your entire attitude, your mind, your discipline and you train your mind to be able to handle many things at once.The worst thing you can do is  have tunnel experience.

You may have more waste then a pro so might cost a bit more in material as you are learning but given your spirit and attitude I say give it a try.
