The ones we used are made out of composite decking.I agree, if your balcony deck us lumber or plywood, you will likely have too much flex for ceramic, porcelain, or stone tiles.

Only thing that will is a cast iron or heavy steel with porcelain finish.As to the window the best is raising a small one clear to the ceiling. with NO ledge of any kind for bottle setting.
