I saw a notice on the door from the city and I tried to get some info on the owner but it looks like an investment company has owned it for several years but no one has been in there.

Do you get interest on that money that is sitting there in your home? 

LOL   That is exactly what I would expect from the Detroit City Government.If you go there, they are likely going to say you first need a license from a different office on the other side of town and when you drive there, they will say you need an appointment with them, but they only have appointments the third Thursday of each month.  

There are very successful STRs here, you just have to know the best areas to be profitable. 

Is this really the property that is best suited for you as investor at this point.

There are a handful of similar zip codes, specific all in Memphis. 

@Andrew Slezak  HUD does studies of rent for the whole country and published the MEDIAN rent for every area/county/zipcode in the country.
