Half-story houses are very common around here ... there were lots of them built after WWII and many older Victorian/Edwardian homes have had their attics turned into a 1/2 story of living space.The slanted ceilings are unavoidable if you are living in a half-story.  

It's a victorian home, but anyways, the porch was in bad shape and wasn't meeting code in any which way.
