I've noticed the images they both use are somewhat similar, and I was wondering if this is an specific Wordpress theme or how are these blog images created?

I would suggest going with a THEME that you don't need to customize to much.Websites won't make you money only your voice and fingers can do that.

Everyone has opinions on what they would spend it on, but from reading these there is a common theme. 

@David Dachtera  one thing is a theme in your testamonials.. all of these people either had construction background or pretty heavy business background.its suckering in the poor newbie folks who have neither and have no cash to speak of.
