I am asking the following question for a family member and want to give them advice:They are living in a poor condition older home and the AC has been broken for months and they also have water leaking in the basement to the point that they have coolers collecting the water to prevent it from soaking everything.

This is what my lawyers I keep on retainer are for exactly.Whenever someone threatens me with legal action I immediately call my attorney and let them deal with the problems.I never respond to their threats because that is normally legal quicksand and can get you into serious trouble if you say even one wrong word to them.Their lawyers will pounce on any mistakes you make in your response and turn them into a nightmare for you and your attorney.Let cooler heads prevail and have no further contact with them whatsoever.Your lawyers should take it from here.
