Each county may be different, but at least in Howard County (since you and I are both in Maryland) has adopted the 2011 NEC, with a few minor exceptions. 2011 NEC says: "All 120-volt, single phase, 15- and 20-ampere branch circuits supplying outlets installed in dwelling unit family rooms, dining rooms, living rooms, parlors, libraries, dens, bedrooms, sunrooms, recreation rooms, closets, hallways, or similar rooms or areas shall be protected by a listed arc-fault circuit interrupter, combination-type, installed to provide protection of the branch circuit."

Main Level - Open up the kitchen to the LR/DR - Keep the family room seperate2nd level - make it 3 regular bedrooms but rework the hallways and doors to give each room better closet space3rd level - Dormer it out and make that a master suite, you can do a bigger bathroom without moving the plumbing stack and add a huge walk in closet across the hallway

They sell spare strips so that you can reverse course when you want to work from a hallway to room, or back into a closet.Here is the flooring running right in front of the closet (grip strip facing the opposite direction)Measure out a length of the grip strip.peel of the backing and place half lengthwise under the plank- and now you simply reverse right into the closet.Easy peasy.

The house is currently set up with large living room w/fireplace, large dining room, 3 bedrooms, mid sized kitchen(with terrible built ins), breakfast nook, one full bathroom, 3 hallway closets, per apartment.
